  5. in first."  Thus spake NBC Today show host Bryant Gumbel,
  6. recommending tough action against his associates in a confidential
  7. memo leaked to New York Newsday last week. The scathing four-page
  8. missive, written last fall to Today executive producer Marty Ryan,
  9. trashed fellow staffers Gene Shalit (whose movie reviews "are often
  10. late" and whose "interviews aren't very good") and consumer
  11. reporter David Horowitz ("a walking cliche"). But the heaviest
  12. artillery was saved for resident jester and weatherman Willard
  13. Scott, who, wrote Gumbel, "holds the show hostage to his assortment
  14. of whims, wishes, birthdays and bad taste. This guy is killing us
  15. and no one's even trying to rein him in." He suggested cutting down
  16. the weatherman's appearances and "nuking" the assistant who comes
  17. up with some of Scott's material. On TV, Scott joked about the
  18. developing soap opera and called the vacationing host "J.R.
  19. Gumbel." But off the air, the weatherman said, "I'm absolutely
  20. distraught." A USA Today call-in poll provided some comfort: Scott
  21. fans trounced detractors 27,300 to 854. Gumbel's memo made no
  22. mention of co-host Jane Pauley. A mere oversight?
